Every few years the HVAC industry changes refrigerants, and every time it does, homeowners get told to either panic-buy before prices go up or sit tight until things settle down. The R-454B transition produced both pieces of advice, usually from people selling something.
Here is the version we give neighbors in Federal Way, Kent, Puyallup and Olympia when they ask whether now is a bad time to buy.
What actually changed
Under the federal AIM Act phasedown, new residential air conditioners and heat pumps had to move to refrigerants with a much lower global warming potential. R-410A — the standard for roughly two decades — has a GWP around 2,088, well above the new limit. Manufacturers stopped building new residential systems with it after the 2025 cutoff and shifted to low-GWP alternatives, primarily R-454B, with some lines on R-32.
That is it. That is the whole event. It was an equipment redesign deadline, not a ban on your existing system.

Why A2L matters to the install, not to you
The "mildly flammable" classification sounds alarming and mostly is not. A2L refrigerants need a significant concentration and an ignition source to burn at all, and the systems are engineered around it — leak detection, specific line set and charge requirements, updated service equipment and tooling. What it really changed is the contractor's side of the job: new gauges, new recovery machines, new training, updated code compliance.
Every brand we install — Day & Night, Carrier and American Standard for ducted systems, Mitsubishi, Daikin and Hitachi for ductless — made the transition. Nobody is stuck. Permits and inspections on A2L equipment are routine now, and we pull the permit on every job regardless.
What it did to prices
Honest answer: equipment list pricing moved during the transition, the way it does in any redesign cycle. New compressors, new controls, new safety hardware, retooled production lines. That is real and it flowed through to installed cost.
But it is one input among several, and it is already baked in. Installed pricing in our service area today looks like this:
- Ducted heat pump: $12,000 to $18,000 in standard markets. $13,800 to $21,600 in affluent markets like Seattle, Maple Valley or Normandy Park. $15,000 to $24,300 in Bellevue, Gig Harbor and Fox Island.
- Ductless mini-split: $8,000 to $14,000 standard, up to $18,900 in luxury markets depending on zone count.
- Heat pump replacement: $10,000 to $16,000 standard.

Does waiting help? Almost never.
The "wait it out" argument assumes prices snap back once the industry adjusts. They do not. The redesigned equipment is now simply what gets built. There is no R-410A production line waiting in the wings to undercut it.
Here is what waiting actually costs you:
- Another season on a failing system. If your heat pump is 15 years old and limping, waiting means paying repair bills on equipment you have already decided to replace — and repairs run $150 to $1,500 typical.
- Emergency-mode decisions. A system that dies in January gets replaced under pressure, with one quote, on whatever equipment is on the shelf. That is the most expensive way to buy anything.
- Rebate exposure. Incentive programs change more often than refrigerants do. The federal 25C tax credit ended December 31, 2025 — no 2026 install qualifies. PSE money for qualifying heat pump conversions is still out there, up to $4,400 depending on what you are replacing and what you install, but since April 2, 2026 it requires a PSE-certified installer. What about the R-410A system you already own?
It is fine. Run it.
R-410A is still produced and still available for servicing existing equipment. Nobody is coming to take your condenser. What will happen over the next decade is what happened with R-22 before it: as production winds down, the per-pound cost of a refrigerant charge drifts upward. That is a slow squeeze, not a cliff.
How that changes the repair-or-replace call
- Under 10 years old, repair is under half the cost of replacement. Repair it. Refrigerant pricing does not change that math.
- 12 to 15 years old, facing a four-figure repair with a refrigerant charge involved. This is where the conversation shifts. You are pouring money into a system with a shrinking service window.

One thing that has not changed: a leaking system should be repaired or retired, not topped off every spring. That was true under R-410A and it is true now.
What actually moves your price more than refrigerant
If you want the real levers on your installed cost, they are these, roughly in order of impact.
Sizing and load
A correct Manual J load calculation decides the tonnage, and tonnage decides a big chunk of the price. Design temperatures across our service area range from 17°F in Olympia to 29°F in Tacoma — a twelve degree spread that changes the answer. Guessing high costs you money twice, once at purchase and again in short-cycling wear.
Ductwork condition
If the ducts are sound, a ducted heat pump is a straightforward changeout. If they are undersized, leaking or 30 years old, that scope belongs on the estimate honestly instead of showing up as a change order.

Electrical and site conditions
Disconnects, circuit capacity, pad location, line set routing, salt-air exposure on waterfront properties. These are the details that separate a real quote from a phone estimate.
What we would tell a neighbor
Buy when your system tells you to buy. If your heat pump or furnace is aging out, spring and early fall are the calm windows — more scheduling flexibility, more time to compare quotes, no January panic. If your system has years left, run it and keep the filter clean.
What you should not do is delay a needed replacement waiting for a refrigerant price correction that is not coming. The transition is done. The equipment on the truck today is the equipment that will be on the truck next year, and every install we do carries a 10-year parts and labor warranty regardless of which refrigerant is in it.
