Air conditioning in Puget Sound is a two-month appliance for most people. It sits quiet from October through May, then gets asked to run flat out during the one week in July when everybody's house hits 84°F at 6 p.m. That usage pattern is exactly why AC repairs here cluster around a handful of predictable failures — and why the price spread is so wide.

Here's what those repairs actually cost, what drives the number, and the point where writing another check stops making sense.

The honest range: $150 to $1,500

In standard Puget Sound markets, AC repair runs $150 to $1,500. Affluent markets run $175 to $1,800. Luxury markets like Bellevue, Gig Harbor and Fox Island run up to $2,000.

That's a ten-to-one spread, which is useless as a budget number on its own. So here's how repairs sort themselves inside it.

What lands at the low end

These are the calls we like making, because the fix is fast and the bill is small.

  • A failed capacitor. The most common single-part AC failure there is. The outdoor fan hums but doesn't spin, or the compressor tries and trips. Small part, quick swap.
  • A burned contactor. The relay that switches the outdoor unit on. Pitted contacts mean the unit either won't start or won't shut off.
  • A clogged condensate drain. Cooling pulls water out of the air, and that water has to go somewhere. A plugged drain line trips the safety float switch and shuts the system down — or worse, overflows onto a ceiling.
  • A filthy evaporator or condenser coil. Not glamorous, but a coil packed with cottonwood fluff and lawn clippings is a real cooling failure with a cleaning-cost fix.
  • A thermostat or wiring fault. A chewed low-voltage wire in a crawl space is a Puget Sound classic. Rodents like the warm side of a duct run.

What lands in the middle

  • Blower motor or fan motor replacement. Bearings dry out, motors seize. Parts cost real money, labor is moderate.
  • Defrost or control board failure on a heat pump running in cooling mode.
  • Refrigerant leak detection plus a repair at an accessible joint. Finding the leak is often more labor than fixing it.
  • A TXV or metering device replacement. The system cools, badly, and freezes the indoor coil.

What pushes toward the top

  • A significant refrigerant leak in the coil or line set. You're paying for leak search, the repair or coil replacement, evacuation, and a full charge by weight.
  • Compressor replacement. The single most expensive component in the box. On an out-of-warranty system this is almost always where the conversation turns to replacement instead.
  • Anything on an R-22 system. R-22 production was phased out. Recharging an old leaking unit is expensive and temporary — you're renting cold air by the pound.

Why the diagnostic visit matters more than the parts

A good chunk of what you're paying for on an AC call isn't a part. It's a technician with gauges finding out whether the problem is the equipment, the airflow, or the ductwork feeding it.

We do it in this order: confirm the complaint, check the thermostat and filter, read the electrical, then put gauges on the refrigerant circuit and measure actual temperature split across the coil. Low charge, restricted airflow and a failing compressor can all look identical from the thermostat. They cost wildly different amounts to fix.

What makes Western Washington AC repairs different

Three local realities shift the odds.

1. Low run hours cut both ways. Your AC works maybe 300 hours a year here versus 1,500 in Phoenix. Mechanically, that's why systems in Puget Sound often outlive their national life expectancy. But a system that sits idle for eight months develops its own problems — seized fan bearings, dried capacitors, wasp nests in the cabinet, a condensate drain colonized by biofilm. Most of our first-hot-week calls are storage problems, not wear problems.

2. Salt air is a real line item. In Des Moines, Dash Point, Steilacoom, Gig Harbor and other waterfront pockets, corrosion eats outdoor coils and electrical connections faster than inland. Coastal homes benefit from corrosion-resistant coil coatings and twice-a-year maintenance — that's cheaper than an early coil replacement.

3. A lot of "AC" here is a heat pump. If your outdoor unit also heats the house in winter, the repair scope and parts list are different — same refrigerant circuit, more controls. It also means a summer breakdown is a winter breakdown you haven't found yet.

Repair or replace: the rule we actually use

No scare tactics, no manufactured urgency. Just arithmetic.

For context on the other side of that decision: central AC installation runs $5,000 to $12,000 in standard markets and $6,000 to $15,000 in affluent markets. A furnace and AC replaced together runs $10,000 to $16,000. A ducted heat pump runs $12,000 to $18,000 standard and covers heating and cooling in one system.

Also worth saying plainly: the federal 25C tax credit ended December 31, 2025. No 2026 installation qualifies for it.

Five ways to keep the bill down

  1. Change the filter. A restricted filter causes coil freeze-ups that get diagnosed as refrigerant problems. Free fix, real money saved.
  2. Clear two feet around the outdoor unit. Shrubs, fence panels, stacked firewood, blackberry — all of it strangles airflow and shortens compressor life.
  3. Rinse the outdoor coil each spring. Garden hose, gentle pressure, top down. Cottonwood season here is brutal on coils.
  4. Call in May, not in July. During a heat wave, everyone calls at once. Off-peak scheduling means faster access and a calmer decision.
  5. Don't run it on "maybe." A system tripping the breaker repeatedly or making a new grinding noise is telling you something. Running it anyway turns a mid-range repair into a compressor.

What we'd tell a neighbor

If your AC is under 12 and something electrical failed, fix it — that's a few hundred dollars for years more service, and anyone telling you a capacitor means you need a new system is selling, not diagnosing.

If it's 15 years old, low on refrigerant again, and your furnace is aging too, stop repairing. You'll spend more chasing it than replacing it, and you'll spend that money in the worst week of the year.
