The unit went in where the plumbing, the panel and the shortest run made sense — not where you wanted it. Now it is four feet from the primary bedroom window, or it is exactly where the new deck is going, or the previous owner put it in a corner that collects moss and gutter drip and never fully dries out. Fair enough. Moving it is a real job with a real price, and it is worth knowing where that money goes before you get a number.

Here is the honest breakdown we give homeowners across Federal Way, Kent, Puyallup and Tacoma when they ask what it costs to relocate an outdoor heat pump.

Why people want the unit moved

The reasons cluster into four buckets, and they do not all justify the same spend.

It is too loud where it sits

A modern outdoor unit is not loud in absolute terms, but three feet under a bedroom window with a wall bouncing sound back at you is a bad geometry. This is the most common request we get, and it is also the one most likely to have a cheaper fix than moving the equipment.

The yard changed

Decks, patios, ADUs, fences, garden beds, a new driveway. The unit was fine in 2016 and is in the way in 2026. Nothing wrong with the equipment, just the location.

The original placement was bad from day one

This one we do move. Units tucked under a leaking gutter, jammed into a corner with under a foot of clearance, sitting in a low spot that ponds every November, or buried behind rhododendrons that have grown into the coil. A heat pump needs air, and airflow starvation costs you efficiency every single hour it runs.

Salt air or drainage exposure

On the water in Des Moines, Dash Point, Steilacoom or Gig Harbor, a few feet of shelter from prevailing wind and spray genuinely extends the life of a coil.

What actually has to happen — the real scope

People picture two guys picking up a box. The box is the easy part.

Recover the refrigerant

You cannot vent refrigerant. It gets recovered into a certified cylinder, and after the move the system is evacuated, leak-checked, and recharged to a weighed-in charge. If the system is older R-410A, that recovery-and-recharge cycle is routine. On newer R-454B equipment there are extra handling requirements. Either way, this step is where a cut-rate operator cuts corners and where a system quietly starts running low a year later.

The line set decides the price

This is the pivot point of the whole quote. If the copper has enough slack to reposition the unit a few feet, the job stays small. If the lines have to be cut and extended — or fully replaced because the new path is longer or runs through a crawl space, under a slab, or around the house — you are buying new copper, new insulation, new brazing, and labor to route it without kinking or trapping oil. Longer runs also mean adjusting the charge.

Electrical

The outdoor unit needs its dedicated 240V circuit and a service disconnect within sight. Move the unit far enough and that circuit has to be extended or re-run, sometimes with a new whip, new conduit, and a relocated disconnect box. We are an HVAC contractor — when a job needs real panel or branch-circuit work, we coordinate a licensed electrician rather than pretend it is our scope.

The pad and the drainage

The new spot needs a level, stable base that does not sink into wet Puget Sound soil. Composite pads, gravel bases, and in some cases wall brackets or risers for flood-prone or heavy-moss locations. Defrost water has to go somewhere that is not your foundation and not a walkway that ices over.

Clearances and the permit

Manufacturers specify minimum clearances on all sides and above. Cities specify setbacks from property lines and, in some jurisdictions, noise limits. A relocation is permitted mechanical work in most of the cities we serve, with an electrical permit when the circuit moves. That inspection is protection for you, not paperwork for us.

Where the money lands

We price relocations off the same repair-and-service band as other in-place work: $150 to $1,500 typical in standard markets, $175 to $1,800 in affluent markets. Where you land inside it is driven almost entirely by distance and whether the line set survives.

That last row is the honest one. Once a relocation involves trenching, a new sub-panel run, or siding and framing work, it stops being a tidy line item and becomes a small project. We will say so on the estimate instead of burying it in a change order.

Rule of thumb we actually use: if the relocation quote climbs past roughly a tenth of what a new system costs and the equipment is already past 12 years old, stop and price replacement instead.

When moving is the wrong answer

The unit is 12 to 15 years old. You are paying to relocate equipment that is near the end of its service life, and you will pay again to place the new one. Better to wait, then put the new system exactly where you want it during a proper install. The unit runs on R-22. Nothing gets relocated on an R-22 system without a serious conversation about replacement first. Recovery and recharge on obsolete refrigerant is expensive and the clock is already run out.

The problem is noise and nothing else. Try the cheap fixes first: isolation pads under the feet, a sound fence built with proper airflow clearance on all sides, trimming back overgrowth, and running the system in a lower-speed setting overnight if the equipment supports it. A variable-speed unit spends most of its life on low anyway.

The new spot is worse. Under a gutter, boxed in by a fence three feet away, or in a corner where cold discharge air recirculates back into the coil. We have declined to move units into spots that would have hurt performance. That is the job.

The Puget Sound details that matter

Our climate is mild — winter design temperatures across our service area run from 17°F in Olympia to 29°F in Tacoma — so heat pumps here rarely struggle with cold. What they struggle with is water and organic debris. Moss, fir needles, blackberry, gutter overflow, and eleven months of damp. A relocation is a good excuse to solve all of it: get the unit out from under the drip line, get it up on a proper base, get real clearance around the coil, and get it where you can actually reach it for maintenance.

If your home is near salt water, ask about corrosion-resistant coil coatings and semi-annual maintenance while the unit is being moved. That is cheaper to address now than after the fins start powdering.

Get a real number for your yard

Every relocation quote comes down to three things we have to see in person: how much slack is in the line set, how far the electrical has to travel, and what the new base needs to be. Photos help, but a walk of the property settles it in ten minutes.
