A breaker doing its job is not a malfunction. It is a $12 device deciding that something on that circuit is pulling more current than the wire can safely carry, and shutting it off before the wire gets hot enough to matter. When the breaker feeding your heat pump, air conditioner, or furnace keeps tripping, the breaker is almost never the villain. It is the messenger.
Here is how we work through it on service calls across Federal Way, Kent, Puyallup, Tacoma, and Olympia — what causes it, what it costs, and where the line sits between HVAC scope and electrician scope.
First, stop resetting it
One reset is reasonable. Two is a decision. Three is a gamble.
Every time you flip that breaker back on, you send full line current into whatever is failing. If the cause is a compressor winding shorted to ground or a chafed wire touching the cabinet, repeated resets can weld contacts, cook insulation, and turn a moderate repair into a full equipment replacement. If the breaker trips a second time within a few minutes, leave it off and call.
What the trip pattern tells us before we open anything
How fast it trips is diagnostic information. Note it before you call — it genuinely shortens the visit.

The seven common causes
1. Dirty coil or restricted airflow
This is the most common and the cheapest to prevent. A clogged filter, a matted outdoor coil full of cottonwood and grass clippings, or shrubs planted tight against the condenser all force the system to work harder and pull more amps. On a heat pump running long winter cycles in a damp Puget Sound crawl space, a coil coated in dust and pet hair will absolutely trip a breaker in month four of the heating season.
Check the filter and clear two feet around the outdoor unit before you call anyone. Sometimes that is the whole fix.
2. A failing run or start capacitor
The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the jolt they need to start. When it weakens, the motor strains against a hard start, current spikes, and the breaker trips. A bulging or leaking capacitor top is a visual giveaway, but plenty of failing caps look perfect and only show up under a meter. This is one of the least expensive repairs we do.
3. A failing condenser fan motor
Worn bearings make the motor drag. Drag means higher amp draw. Higher amp draw for twenty minutes means a tripped breaker. A fan that hums, wobbles, or runs slow is on the way out — and a dead fan motor also makes the compressor overheat, which is how one $500 part becomes a much larger bill.
4. A grounded or shorted compressor
The expensive one. Insulation inside the compressor windings breaks down and current finds a path to ground. The breaker trips instantly and repeatedly. A technician confirms it with an insulation resistance test rather than guessing. On a system past twelve years old, a grounded compressor usually turns into a replacement conversation, not a repair one.
5. Loose, corroded, or chafed wiring
Salt air near Dash Point, Des Moines, Steilacoom, and Gig Harbor corrodes terminals. Rodents in crawl spaces chew low-voltage and line-voltage wire alike. Vibration over ten years loosens lugs, and a loose connection generates heat, which raises resistance, which generates more heat. Sometimes the repair is fifteen minutes of tightening and cleaning; sometimes it is a section of whip and disconnect replaced.
6. A wrong-sized breaker or an overloaded circuit
Every piece of HVAC equipment has a nameplate listing minimum circuit ampacity and maximum overcurrent protection. If a previous install put a 30-amp breaker where the nameplate calls for 40, it will nuisance-trip forever no matter how many parts you throw at it. Same story if something else got added to a circuit that was never sized to share.
This is one reason we pull permits on every job. An inspected install has the breaker, wire gauge, and disconnect matched to the equipment on paper.
7. The breaker itself is worn out
Breakers are mechanical. They fatigue with heat and with every trip. A breaker that has done its job fifty times may start tripping at 80% of its rating. We rule this out by measuring actual amp draw first — if the equipment is drawing well within spec and the breaker still opens, the breaker is the problem, and replacing it is an electrician's task.
What the repairs cost
Repair pricing on heat pumps and AC systems runs $150 to $1,500 in standard Puget Sound markets, $175 to $1,800 in affluent markets like Seattle, Maple Valley, and Fircrest, and $200 to $2,000 in Bellevue, Gig Harbor, and Fox Island. Where a specific job lands depends on the part.
- Capacitor, contactor, cleaning, wiring repair — lower end of the range
- Condenser fan motor or blower motor — middle of the range
- Refrigerant-side work driving high head pressure and high amps — upper end
- Grounded compressor — technically repairable, rarely worth it out of warranty

If the fault turns out to be in the panel, the branch circuit, or the breaker, that work belongs to a licensed electrician. A 100-amp to 200-amp panel upgrade generally runs in the $2,000 to $4,500 range with an electrician, though most homes never need one just to run a heat pump.
When tripping means replace, not repair
The honest rule we use: if the system is under about ten years old and the repair costs less than half of a new system, fix it. Past twelve to fifteen years, with a four-figure electrical fault and an aging compressor, replacement usually wins — a ducted heat pump runs $12,000 to $18,000 installed in standard markets, replacement of an existing system $10,000 to $16,000, and every Varsity install carries a 10-year parts and labor warranty.

- Measure real amp draw on the compressor, fan, and blower under load.
- Test capacitors, contactor, and motor windings, including insulation resistance to ground.
- Inspect the whip, disconnect, and terminals for heat damage and corrosion.
- Check airflow — filter, coils, return path — because half of the overheating cases start there.
- Give you the price before we touch a wrench.
