The crawl space is the part of the house nobody looks at. It's dark, it smells like dirt, and the only people who go down there are inspectors, pest guys, and us. Which is exactly why failed duct insulation goes unnoticed for a decade while a homeowner blames the furnace, the thermostat, or the back bedroom for being cold.

Here's what actually happens to ductwork in a Western Washington crawl space, how to tell whether yours has failed, what fixing it costs, and when re-wrapping is throwing money at a system that needs replacing instead.

Why Puget Sound crawl spaces are hard on ducts

A vented crawl space is, thermally speaking, outdoors with a roof on it. On a 30°F January morning, the air surrounding your supply ducts is somewhere in the 35 to 45 degree range. Every foot of poorly insulated duct is a radiator heating the dirt.

Add our specific local conditions:

  • Ground moisture. Damp soil under a torn or missing vapor barrier keeps relative humidity high year-round. Fiberglass duct wrap that gets wet loses most of its R-value and does not fully recover.
  • Long service life on cheap materials. Flex duct from the 1980s and 1990s was often installed with a thin insulation jacket and plastic tape. Tape adhesive dries out, the outer jacket splits, and the insulation slumps to the bottom of the run.
  • Gravity and traffic. Every plumber, cable installer, and pest tech who crawls through pushes on duct straps. Sagging runs stretch, kink, and pull loose at boots.
  • Rodents. Insulation is nesting material. Once it's opened up, it stays opened up.

Why it matters more with a heat pump

A gas furnace pushes supply air somewhere around 120 to 140°F. A heat pump delivers a gentler, steadier stream that's typically 95 to 110°F. That's a smaller temperature difference between the air inside the duct and the crawl space around it — so the same duct losses that were merely annoying with a furnace become the reason a room feels lukewarm with a heat pump. Warning signs your duct insulation has failed

You don't need a blower door to spot most of these.

  • One or two rooms — usually the ones farthest from the equipment — never quite catch up, in both summer and winter.
  • Floors over the crawl space feel cold even when the thermostat is satisfied.
  • The system runs long cycles and still lands short of setpoint on the coldest mornings.
  • Registers deliver weak airflow compared to the ones near the equipment.
  • Dust comes back within days of cleaning, which usually means the return side is pulling crawl-space air.
  • A musty or earthy smell when the blower starts. That's crawl space air entering the duct system, and it's an air-quality issue, not just an efficiency one.

The five-minute check

If your crawl space is safe and dry enough to enter, bring a flashlight and look for four things: silver or gray wrap hanging loose or torn open, insulation that is visibly compressed or stained, duct sections resting directly on the ground or in standing water, and disconnected boots where the duct meets the floor. A duct lying in dirt is a duct that is losing heat and will corrode from the outside in. If it's wet down there, water is the first problem to solve — insulating over a moisture problem just buys you a soggy jacket.

The payback, done honestly

Duct insulation on its own is a comfort purchase that also saves energy. Duct sealing is the bigger energy lever — a leak dumps conditioned air straight into the crawl space regardless of how well the duct is wrapped — which is why the two jobs belong together. Doing one without the other is half a repair.

The payback comes fastest in three situations:

  1. You're installing new equipment anyway. The crew is already in the crawl space with the system open.   2. You have long duct runs to a distant wing or bonus room. Losses scale with length and exposure. Short, compact duct systems have less to gain.
  3. The insulation is genuinely gone, not just tired. Going from bare metal to R-8 is a real change. Going from R-6 to R-8 is not worth mobilizing for by itself.

When re-insulating is the wrong call

We'd rather lose the small job than sell you the wrong one. Skip the wrap and go to replacement when:

  • The flex duct is crushed, kinked, or has torn inner liner. Insulation can't fix a restricted airway.
  • Runs are 20 to 25 years old and brittle. You'll be back down there in three years.
  • There's rodent contamination inside the ducts.
  • The system is undersized for the equipment you're about to install, particularly on the return side. Adding insulation to an undersized duct system just makes the airflow problem quieter.
