Every house has one. The back bedroom over the garage. The office at the end of the hall. The room that runs eight degrees colder than the thermostat says the house is, so somebody sleeps under two extra blankets and quietly resents the furnace.

The first instinct is almost always the same: just add a duct in there. Sometimes that is exactly right and it is a genuinely satisfying fix. Sometimes it makes three other rooms worse. Here is how we tell the difference, and what the work actually costs in Puget Sound homes.

Before you spend a dollar, prove it's the duct

A cold room has about six common causes, and only two of them are solved by new ductwork. Run these checks first — they're free.

The free checks

  • Is the register open and unblocked? Sounds insulting. It is also the fix roughly as often as anything else. A couch, a rug, or a closed damper in a floor register kills a room.
  • Is the return path blocked? Air has to leave the room to keep flowing into it. If the door is closed and there's no return grille or door undercut, supply air stalls out. Try leaving the door open for a day and see what changes.
  • Does the register blow at all? Hold a tissue to it with the fan running. Weak flow means a duct problem. Strong flow into a still-cold room means an insulation, window, or load problem.
  • Check the filter. A loaded filter starves the far ends of the duct system first, and the far end is almost always the problem room.

The signs it really is the ductwork

  • The run to that room is a long, kinked, sagging flex duct crawling across a crawlspace. Every bend costs you airflow.
  • The duct is disconnected at the boot or the trunk. We find this more often than homeowners expect — it happens after crawlspace work, pest control, or plumbing repairs.
  • Insulation on the run is compressed, wet, or gone. A damp Puget Sound crawlspace destroys duct wrap, and an uninsulated run in a 40-degree crawlspace delivers cool air no matter how hot it leaves the furnace.
  • The room was added later — a converted garage, a bonus room over the garage, a finished basement — and was never given a run of its own.

That last one is the real "add a duct" case.

What adding a duct run actually involves

It is not a vent. It is a branch: a take-off collar cut into the main trunk line, a run of insulated duct sized for the room's load, a boot at the floor or ceiling, a register, and a balancing damper so the new branch doesn't hog air.

The three access paths, cheapest to worst

  1. Crawlspace. The friendly one. Most Federal Way, Kent, Auburn, and Puyallup ramblers and split-levels have a trunk running through a crawlspace with room to work. New run, new boot up through the floor, done in a day.
  2. Attic. Workable, but the duct needs heavy insulation because an attic hits extremes in both directions here, and the boot drops through a ceiling that then needs patching.
  3. Finished walls and multi-story chases. This is where budgets go to die. Getting a run from a basement trunk to a second-floor bedroom often means opening a closet, a soffit, or a wall, then drywall and paint after. It's doable. It's rarely the cheapest way to solve the comfort problem.

What it costs in Washington

A single added branch is duct modification, not a full replacement, so it prices under a whole-house job.

We don't publish a flat per-run price because there isn't an honest one. Twelve feet of new duct across an open crawlspace and forty feet through a two-story chase are not the same job. The trade-off nobody mentions: duct work bundled into a heat pump or furnace install is almost always cheaper than duct work as its own separate trip. The trap: your system may not have air to give

This is the part that separates a real assessment from a guess.

Your blower moves a fixed volume of air. If the system is already delivering everything it's got, adding a seventh supply run doesn't create air out of nowhere — it splits the same air seven ways instead of six. The cold room warms up a little. The living room and the master cool down a little. Total comfort: unchanged, wallet: lighter.

So before we cut a take-off, we check static pressure, look at the equipment's rated airflow versus the duct system it's feeding, and count what's already connected. Three outcomes are possible:

  • There's spare capacity. Great. Add the run, damper it in, balance the system, and the fix holds.
  • There's capacity but the trunk is undersized. The branch works only if the trunk is modified too. That's a bigger scope and we'll say so on the estimate rather than after.
  • There's nothing to spare. Adding a run makes the house worse. This is the moment to be honest instead of selling sheet metal.

When a mini-split beats new ductwork

In Puget Sound homes, the third outcome is common enough that it deserves its own plan. A single-zone ductless mini-split brings its own heating and cooling capacity to the room. It doesn't borrow air from anyone. It's a separate thermostat for the space that's always been the outlier, and it adds air conditioning to a room that probably bakes every August too.

It's the better answer when:

  • The room is over a garage, in a finished attic, or at the far end of a long ranch where duct losses eat the delivery.
  • There's no practical duct path without opening finished walls.
  • The existing system is maxed out on airflow.
  • The room's use changed — a nursery, a home office, a rental space — and it needs independent control, not slightly more warm air.

No guessing from the driveway. We open the crawlspace or attic, trace the run serving that room, measure airflow and static pressure, check the equipment's capacity against what the duct system is already carrying, and then tell you which of the three fixes your house is actually built for: repair the existing run, add a properly sized new branch, or put a ductless head in the room and stop fighting physics.

Sometimes the answer is a $0 fix we find in the crawlspace — a disconnected boot, a damper somebody closed a decade ago. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a duct run you didn't need. That's the whole business model.

Bottom line

Adding a duct and vent to a chronically cold room is real, worthwhile work when the system has airflow to spare and there's a clean path to the room. It costs less than the $3,000 to $8,000 full-replacement range in standard markets, more if it means opening finished walls, and least of all if it rides along with equipment you're already replacing.

When the system is tapped out or the path doesn't exist, a single-zone mini-split solves it permanently instead of shuffling the discomfort to a different room.
